Search Engines

E-mail Print PDF

Search engines on the internet allow you to find information scattered across the Web. You can search for most anything by either topic or name including people and places.

There are several that we will mention here but more and more are being added every year, each time getting better and faster. If you are doing any type of search, try a variety of these search engines to get a complete list of information as each one is fine tuned to search for specific items making each engine's response different in some way.

When doing a search, a list of Web sites containing the information you requested will be shown. Don't be shocked when you see there is a list of thousands of these pages. Usually, the first few have what you are looking for.

Most search sites also offer some sort of an advanced search option. Try this when the first search doesn't seem to get you to what you are looking for. Also, before using a search engine for the first time, check their hints for how to type in the request. They don't all use the same search method and some may have hints that will help narrow your search based on the way you enter the information you are seeking.

Here is a review of some of the most widely used search engines:

  1. Google
  2. Altavista
  3. Yahoo
  4. MSN
  5. Infoseek

There is also a neat one that searches multiple search engines at once and produces the results in a very nice presentation. Checkout the Dogpile. Cool
